Hello fearless Tumblr app developers!

Today we’re pushing a few changes to our Application Developer and API License Agreement that we wanted to make you aware of. These changes likely won’t impact the majority of you.

We made a few cosmetic edits to soften and clarify language in the agreement.
We modified the terms to apply to those developers building applications using our data firehose. This is mainly a mechanical change to the document.
We added restrictions against modifying the order of content that we send you, and clarified that anything we insert (like sponsored content!) shouldn’t be removed.
We clarified our previous restriction on public re-display.
Location should reflect real, mappable geography.
We clarified our policy on collection of private information, emphasizing the need for user notice and consent when appropriate.

ATTN: fantastic theme developers!

Tumblr users can now interact with posts straight from the blog index and permalink pages on your theme! This is super exciting news! Previously blog visitors could only like or reblog posts through the controls in the corner of post permalinks.

All you have to do is incorporate our new Like and Reblog buttons anywhere in your design — we’ll take care of the rest.

If you’ve been using other methods to add this functionality to your themes, you’ll need to update to the latest code. Visit our updated Theme Developers documentation for more information.

Last week, two of our engineers, Wolf and JC, got to stay up all night eating pizza with some really talented young hackers at two different hackathons — 2013 hackNY Student Hackathon at Columbia University and Photo Hack Day at Facebook HQ.

After a long day of hacking, pizza, sleep deprivation, more pizza, and some DIY tacos, participants demoed their hacks, including a few for the Tumblr API. We were absolutely blown away by the creativity and quality of the projects and look forward to seeing what you’ll build at the next hackathon!

Over the past few weeks we’ve open-sourced quite a few official client libraries for the Tumblr API. Today I’m proud to announce the Tumblr iOS SDK, an Objective-C library for easily integrating Tumblr data into your iOS (or OS X) applications, however you see it.

The Tumblr SDK for iOS contains a few different components to start:

Authentication (OAuth and xAuth implementations)

A full wrapper around all of our API endpoints

Inter-app communication (this is pretty limited at the moment but we plan to expand it quite a bit going forward)

A UIActivity stub for easy inclusion of a Tumblr button in a standard Apple UIActivityViewController

We’ve been using this SDK in production for quite some time now and are thrilled to finally be able to share it with you.

If you’re interested in integrating with Tumblr on iOS or OS X in a way that the SDK doesn’t currently facilitate, please get in touch. I’m very interested in hearing any and all feedback on how we can make this as easy as possible.

I’m here to announce another new addition to our list of official API clients. This week we have tumblr.php - it’s available on GitHub and composer via packagist. It is tested, is PSR-2 compatible, and is well documented.

Like the other clients we’ve been announcing (most recently JS and Java) it has full support for all of the Tumblr v2 API endpoints.

Time to make something cool!

Last week we announced our first official API client, for JavaScript (read: the announcement). This week we’re back to announce the release of an official Java client, Jumblr:

}
Like its JavaScript counterpart, Jumblr comes with full support for all of the API V2 endpoints. Check out more detail on the github page!

Today I’m excited to announce the release of tumblr.js, the first of several official API clients we’ll be rolling out over the next few months.

You can install it now with npm, and start making something awesome:

No, currently there is no Meetup API for Tumblr. One currently isn’t planned, but feel free to make any suggestions you think the API needs!

This week, we are excited to bring a new feature to the API: the ability to consume a user’s likes if they have been made public in their Settings.

Here’s an example request:

http://api.tumblr.com/v2/blog/codingjester.tumblr.com/likes?api_key=your_key

You’ll receive a payload of Post objects that have been liked by that user. If you attempt to access a blog that has not shared their likes, you will get our standard 401.

This could become a guessing game on which blog have support the access of their likes. To prevent this, we’ve added a new field: share_likes to the blog object, accessible from the /info and the /user/info routes.

Lets look at an example payload from the /info route.

Tumblr Maintenance - Saturday October 6th 2012

Tumblr will be performing maintenance Saturday, October 6th 2012, meaning the API will not be returning expected values (please see official notice here). We wanted to make sure that developers understand what the API will be returning during this time.

The API will be returning a 503 status code (Service Unavailable) with an accompanied JSON payload. An example can be found below:

{ "meta" : { "status" : 503, "msg" : "Service Unavailable"}, "response" : "Tumblr is currently performing scheduled maintenance but will be back shortly! Sorry for any inconvenience." }

Please do not try to string match against that response, as it may change any time between now and the actual maintenance.

Today we’re announcing the release of a brand new feature: our Tagged API, which allows developers to find posts based on their tags.

Lets take a look at an example with the gif tag.

http://api.tumblr.com/v2/tagged?tag=gif&api_key=your_consumer_key

The response will be a pay load of post objects that have been most recently added to that tag.

Pagination is taken care of by the “before” parameter. This is the timestamp that is returned from one of the post objects in the pay load. Lets look at an example of pagination.

http://api.tumblr.com/v2/tagged?tag=gif?before=1345742848&api_key=your_consumer_key

Note: You have to be authenticated with OAuth to access certain tags that are considered adult in nature.

With access to private posts & blogs being released last week, we decided to add a field called state which indicates the state the current post is in. This field will be available on the /post, /queue and /draft routes as part of the response object for posts.

As a side related fix to this, we have added the ability for you to create a private post by using the state parameter with the value of private.

Any plans to open up things like replying to posts and asks in the API? It'd be of great help to a lot of developers.

This week we have a few new features to announce for developers!

First up, We have added the ability for applications to access private blogs & posts for a user when sending a fully authenticated request to /posts and /user/info. This has been one of most requested features on the API Forum, so we’re excited to release it to you all. The full documentation is currently up and available here.

Here are a few other documentation tweaks that have gone up:

Liked - A Boolean field that tells you if the currently authenticated user has liked a post.
Queued Docs - Updates to pagination documentation.
Submissions Docs - Updates to pagination documentation.

We also want to let you know that we’ve opened up Asks and we’re more than happy to help field any problems or questions you may have!

Welcome to the official Tumblr Developers Blog

Our developer community is hugely important to us and we’re thrilled to finally have a “home” to share news and be more transparent with all of you. Here you will find changelogs, announcements, and highlights from our developer community.

To kick this off, an update on our API.

It’s been a little over a year since our introduction of API v2 and it’s been amazing to see the massive adoption since then. Great companies have used the API to create beautiful new interfaces and integrations with Tumblr. We’ve even started using API v2 to create our own native applications on iOS and Android to give you the power of Tumblr on the go. The resounding success of API v2 is one of the things that prompted us to create the very blog you’re reading. We’ll also start creating beta features such as OAuth 2.0 for all API v2 requests.

Now that v2 has reached stability & maturity, this also means it’s time for us to begin to phase out API v1. We will be phasing out all authenticated requests for API v1, while leaving in place all unauthenticated reads. The current date for the phase out of authenticated reads for v1 will tentatively be September 1st, 2012.

We thank all of you for continuing to use the API and building some of the most innovative applications that help us follow the world’s creators. As always, your thoughts and feedback are welcome. Please feel free to comment here or on the Google Group.
